Are Sunday Culture candles safe?

Sunday Culture sand wax is made from 100% pure plant-based wax, so it burns clean with almost no smoke or soot.

And here’s the cool part: if the candle gets knocked over, the sand wax self-extinguishes the flame, so there is no risk of accidental fire. If you forget and leave it burning, the wick eventually takes a dip and snuffs. Safety and style all in one!

However, never leave a candle burning unattended.

Are Sunday Culture candles pet-friendly?

Sunday Culture's sand wax is plant-based, clean-burning, and pet-friendly. Keeping them out of reach of pets is still recommended since they’re technically not edible and burn with real fire, but you'll be glad to know Sunday Culture's wax is non-toxic and not expected to be harmful if a small amount is ingested.

You can also comfort yourself, knowing that sand wax self-extinguishes if accidentally spilled as the wax snuffs the flame.

What are the ingredients?

Sunday Cultures sand wax is plant-based, vegan, and burns cleanly with minimal smoke or soot. It is derived from certified, sustainably sourced palm oil; Sunday Culture has an RSPO certificate to prove it. Sunday Cultures wax does not contain paraffin, soy or any known allergens.

What type of vessel can I use?

Fire-safe containers are recommended. However, you can get creative with other options, too—ensure they're spacious enough. The key is to keep the melt pool away from the edges and ensure your vessel stays cool while burning. Aim for at least 10 cm in width at the narrowest point, but always test it to ensure it stays chill when lit.

For the best burn, keep at least 5 cm of sand wax around each wick (one wick per 10 cm wide container!) and leave at least 2.5 cm between the bottom of the wick and the base of your vessel.

How long does the wax last?

The longevity of Sunday Culture's sand wax depends on how you use it. Whether you’re relighting the same wick or switching it up, using one wick or multiple, and how long you let it burn before refreshing—all these choices will impact how long your candle lasts.

On the bright side, Sunday Cultures sand wax burns slower than traditional candles, giving you up to 40 hours of burn time for a 220g Candle and a massive 130 hours for the 650g Refill.

Sunday Culture uses both natural and synthetic fragrances in its scented products. Sunday Cultures scents are free of phthalates and parabens.

How strong is the scent?

Sunday Cultures scents have a soft yet noticeable presence—enough to fill your space with a beautiful aroma but never overpowering. Even when using refills to create a large centrepiece or lighting up multiple candles, the scent stays balanced and easy on the senses, giving you all the ambience without being too much.

If you want a more pungent scent, we recommend using Sunday Culture refills to create a large candle with multiple wicks or fill numerous candles.

What do I do with the wax and wick once the candle is blown out?

You have so many options!

  1. You can relight the same wick multiple times and burn it as long as it lasts.
  2. You can also cut the wick and re-use the part that hasn't been used yet, or
  3. You can flip the wick to bury the melt pool for zero waste while making your candle look brand new.

It's totally up to you! Keep in mind cutting the wick will shorten the burn time.

Do you have to use a new wick every time?

You can relight the same wick multiple times and burn it as long as it lasts. You'll receive plenty of wicks with Sunday Culture products to refresh your candle as often as you'd like to make it look new again.

My wick extinguishes quickly; what am I doing wrong?

The most common reason the wick burns too quickly is if the wick tip is left too far out of the sand wax. When inserting the wick, aim to have only about a quarter-inch tip sticking out, just enough to light it. Leaving the wick out further will shorten the burn time. If your vessel is too shallow, you can trim the wick in half, and now you have two wicks!

You can also cut the wick and re-use the part that hasn't been used yet or flip the wick to bury the melt pool for zero waste while still making your candle look brand new.

Can the sand wax float?

It sure does! We recommend pouring at least a 2" height of sand wax on top of the water and ensuring the wick's bottom is not touching the water.

You can even add decorations to the water. To do this, add any decorations you'd like into a clear vessel, fill it with water until the object is submerged, and then pour the sand wax on top.

Can I reuse the sand wax after using it as a floating candle?

Yes! Just scoop the wax out with a spoon or catch it in a fine-meshed strainer, then allow it to air dry on paper towels before reusing. The more you spread them out, the faster they will dry.

Why has my sand wax started to go yellow?

This common issue occurs when your candle has been kept in direct sunlight. That's okay. Mix or shake your sand wax around; it should look pearly white again. In the future, you can move your candle to somewhere less exposed to prevent further yellowing.
